2XU Compression Run 2010
2XU Compression Run 2010
Date: Sunday, April 11 2010
Venue: Sentosa
Flag-off: 7.45am (Delayed to 8am)

The inaugural 2XU Compression Run was held recently on April 11 2010 at Sentosa. It was organised by Key Power International Pte Ltd. Quite a huge number of participants turned up for this event even hough the OSIM Singapore International Triathlon was running on the same day.
I was really looking forward to this event as this will be my very first time running in Sentosa. Furthermore, as this event was organise on the day of one my closest friend's friend birthday (we have been friend since in primary school), I'm dedicating this run to her as part of my birthday gift to her (Happy Birthday, Murani).
There are two categories offered in this event - 12km mens and 12km womens. The start and end point of the race will be at Siloso Beach.
A few days before the event, I was down with flu and fever, and thus I was confined at home instead of doing my runs. When the day finally arrived, my fever has dissipated a little but my flu was still hindering my proper breathing. Since this is my first ever run in Sentosa, I will not allow the sickness to stop me from going for the run. Thus, I down a bottle of the snakehead fish essence in the hope of revitalising my body.
The flag-off for both the mens and womens category was suppose to be at 7.45am but due to minor hiccups with the shuttle service that was provided by the organiser from the HarbourFront Interchange to Siloso Beach, participants were still strolling in after 7.45am and the flag-off time was delayed. As many participants at the starting point were groaning and moaning about the delay, the event was finally flaged-off at 8am. The last participant that ran out of the starting point was at 8.30am.
For this event, I wore my normal New Balance lightning-dry top, 2XU short compression tights, Nike dri-fit socks and my newly purchased Nike LunarGlide+ shoes. Prior to the race, I did not take the time to look at the race route and I assumed that it will a flat run throughout. The first 3km was a breeze, my flu seemed like it had disappeared, I was breathing normally and the new shoes felt good on my feet.
Soon after we reached the end point of Tanjong Beach and heading towards the Telecoms Station, we met with our first obstacle, a long steep slope. This was where my problem started almost immediately. My flu suddenly re-appeared and I had a hard time breathing properly. My legs don't seem to have that strength to climb the slopes and my body just felt so weak. But I was too determined to complete the race, and hence I slowed down my pace alot.
The sun seemed to rise quickly than it usual self. The heat was just spell-binding and frustrations were shown on many of the participants' faces due to the lack of water points and lack of volunteers manning the water points throughout the running route.
Every time, I passed a water point, I took the opportunity to hydrate myself as much as possible and wet my head and body. I know that I can never hit my target time of completing the race below 1 hour but at the state I'm in, I feel completing the course will be a great achievement by itself.
Upon reaching the finishing point, I was greeted with rousing cheers and applause both by participants that have already completed the course as well as volunteers. I was ecstatic when I looked at the timer board and it was showing 1 hr and 18mins. Even though I ran a very slow pace, I still managed to complete the course at a respectable time.
The race was won by our very own National Triathlete, Mok Ying Ren at a time of 40mins and 1sec, a time which I can only dream of doing in my sleep but nonetheless, I felt that I had a done a great job. The event was close with lucky-draws giveaways. However since most of the participants had left the location, the lucky-draws was turned to quizzes and impromptu dance competition which I participated and won.
All-in-all, I had a blast that day. Met old friends and made new friends too. My next race will be the F1 Nature Run at Macritchie on April 25 2010.
